Matteo turned professional in 2019 at 18 y/o while playing his last junior year during which he ended no.22 in the world ITF Junior Ranking He climbed from #1008 in January 2021 to #363 in the rankings at the end of the season. In 2022, Matteo transitioned to the Challenger Tour level, the stage between the ITF and the ATP Tour. That year, Matteo won 1 title and reached two finals on the Challenger Tour thus entering the top 150 of the ATP rankings and earning a spot in the Next Gen ATP Finals on home soil in Milan which was the pinnacle of a promising 2022 season.2023 has been the year of the revelation for Matteo and his rise to stardom began at the Madrid Masters where he beat the world no.4 Casper Ruud breaking the top 100 of the ATP rankings. At the US Open, he reached the 4th round beating the likes of Cameron Norrie and Arthur Fils, only losing to Carlos Alcaraz. Giving the lead to Team Italy in the Davis Cup final and winning the competition has been the cherry on the cake after this convincing season.
Alessandro Petrone has been Matteo’s personal coach since 2021 and is travelling on the ATP Tour with him every week, along with Matteo Civarolo, his assistant coach, Filippo Ferraris, his physiotherapist and Diego Silva, his fitness trainer.
